The importance of the social license in modern mining

Wetland and savanna in the area of influence of a project

The success of mining and energy projects in Latin America no longer depends only on geological and financial viability. Today, the social license to operate (SLO) is a determining factor in whether operations progress or are halted.

What is the social license?

Unlike a mining title or an environmental license granted by the government, the social license is not written on paper. It is an intangible, dynamic and informal agreement of trust and acceptance granted to the mining company by local communities and stakeholders in the territory.

Three pillars for building trust

  • Timely and verifiable information: sharing information about environmental and social impacts honestly.
  • Shared value: ensuring that economic development reaches the residents of the area of influence directly.
  • Active listening: establishing two-way dialogue channels and resolving complaints before they escalate into conflicts.

Measuring social performance

With EcoAnalítica we developed the SLO Monitor, a platform that allows management teams to quantitatively measure the state of their social license. By turning complex perceptions into analyzable data, we enable proactive decisions to prevent operational interruptions and create sustainable value.
